This week we have two prog rock tracks from 1978 from two very successful exponents of the genre. Prog rock is often criticised for being very self indulgent and overblown and some of it can be, but the musicianship cannot be denied and sometimes it can be very beautiful and atmospheric and I think these two tracks show that.
“Many Too Many” by Genesis from their album “… And Then There Were Three”
The album title refers to them becoming a trio (Mike Rutherford, Tony Banks (who wrote this song) and Phil Collins) after the departure of guitarist Steve Hackett the previous year and original lead singer Peter Gabriel who left in 1975. Drummer Phil Collins took over reluctantly as lead singer after Gabriel’s departure after an unsuccessful search for a replacement.

“Onward” by Yes from their album “Tormato” (spelt that way!)
This song was written by founding member Chris Squire who died last year and was the only member of Yes to be there for all their albums.
Lead singer Jon Anderson and keyboardist Rick Wakeman left the band after this album, both later to return though!
